Unless you’re new to Business Solutions magazine, you know we’ve been on a crusade the past 18 months or so educating VARs and integrators on the great opportunity that is IP video surveillance. Some have embraced our recommendation, others have been skeptical and are holding off.
When I encounter readers in that skeptical camp, one of the first things I uncover is that they really don’t have enough information to hold back on adding IP cameras to their line cards. In short, they don’t know what they don’t know.
What doesn’t help is that many readers have looked at IP in the past so they have some preconceived notions about it. Too expensive. Too complex. High bandwidth requirements. The problem is that — since there’s been so much advancement in this space in recent years (year, even) — much of what people think they know is no longer true.
Last week I recorded the below video blog, which due to illness I was unable to post in a timely fashion. So, here today is my look at one preconceived notion about IP video and how it’s not necessarily true today.

With a degree in applied science (photography) and a certification from Microsoft in systems engineering, I advise you to not waste your time with the IP cameras you have evaluated. Even if you cannot get them “FREE”, spend the $100 or so and get the ASANTE “SMARTBOT”. Make sure it is the “SMARTBOT”.
Easy to setup, both wired & wireless, and can be configured to select zones to monitor in incredible ways. Alerts, alarms, e-mail video, ftp, smtp plus other protocols to computers and smart phones. Can even access the individual cameras via the internet. Each camera has a “Baby” server.
Scan thru & find special events, areas of interest with Time & dates.
I have and use multiple units, and find them valuable & rewarding.
Good luck.
